A screen color does not automatically match printed packaging. Light, ink, substrate and process have different color limits.
Why is RGB not a direct print reference?
Screens emit light; print reflects it. Vivid RGB colors may fall outside the chosen CMYK gamut. Convert with the printer profile and substrate in mind.
When are spot colors useful?
Use spot inks for brand consistency, limited-color processes or special effects. A color name alone does not guarantee results; substrate, ink density and a physical reference matter.
How does substrate color affect results?
Kraft, metallized film and clear stock influence color. White ink may be needed for opacity and should be prepared as a separate layer within supplier tolerances.
What does each proof establish?
A screen PDF checks content, a digital proof approximates color, a contract proof targets a process, and a production sample shows the actual press and substrate. Record each proof’s limitations.
