Structure and sizing
1. Measure the printable area, not the container. Bottles and jars have curvature, seams, shoulders and mold lines. Get the real printable dimensions from your packaging supplier, and for round containers check the minimum diameter your printer can apply labels to.
2. Choose the label format deliberately. Front + back label pair, single wrap-around, or shrink sleeve — each changes the design canvas and the cost. Wrap-arounds are economical; sleeves give 360° coverage but distort artwork, so critical text must sit in low-distortion zones.
3. Plan for the curve. On round containers, only about one-third of the label is readable from any single viewing angle. Everything that must be seen at first glance belongs inside that front arc.
Information hierarchy
4. Rank your messages before designing. At a glance the customer should read, in order: brand, product type, variant/flavor, key benefit. If the front panel tries to say eight things, it says nothing. This hierarchy is the single biggest difference between amateur and professional labels.
5. Test type size at real distance. Shelf products are read from about one meter away; e-commerce thumbnails compress the same label into a 100-pixel square. Print a draft at 100% and photograph it from across the room — if the variant name disappears, redesign before you fall in love with the layout.
6. Design the variant system, not one label. If you will have multiple flavors or strengths, define the color-coding and naming logic now. Retrofitting a system onto a single finished label always shows.
Compliance basics (US, UK, EU)
7. Reserve space for mandatory content early. Requirements differ by market and category, but the pattern is constant: net quantity, ingredient/allergen information, business address, country-specific marks, and category-specific panels — the FDA-style Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts panel in the US, and the tabular nutrition declaration with defined minimum x-heights in the EU and UK. These blocks are large; a design that ignores them until the end gets rebuilt.
8. Know your category's extras. Supplements, cosmetics and alcohol each carry additional rules — warning statements, INCI ingredient naming for cosmetics, alcohol duty and health marks. 9. Multi-market product? Design multilingual zones now. Export labels often need two or three languages. Decide whether you print market-specific labels or one multilingual label — it changes the whole layout.

10. Barcode: size, color, placement. Keep the barcode at or above minimum size, dark bars on a light background (never white-on-color or heavily curved), with quiet space around it. A failed scan at a retailer is a delisting risk, not a design detail.
11. Match material and finish to the product's life. Refrigerated, oily, or bathroom products need appropriate stock and lamination — a paper label on a shower product is a warranty claim waiting to happen. Finish also communicates: matte + uncoated reads natural/craft, gloss + foil reads premium/energetic.
12. Deliver true print-ready files. Final artwork should include the dieline on its own layer, 2–3 mm bleed, safe margins for text, CMYK (plus named spot/Pantone colors if used), outlined or embedded fonts, and 300 DPI images. Ask your printer for their spec sheet before finalizing — every press has quirks.
