A bottle or jar label works on a curved surface that may also be wet, oily or cold. Effective design resolves the visible zone, substrate and application line together.
How is the front-facing zone defined?
The complete label is not visible from the shelf at once. Keep the brand, product name and variant within the central viewing zone according to container diameter, shelf angle and overlap. Confirm measurements on the real container with the supplier.
Wraparound or separate front and back labels?
A wraparound label provides continuous graphics and more information space. Separate labels can create a product window and support different materials. Choose according to copy volume, geometry, labeling equipment and cost.
How are stock and adhesive selected?
Paper can provide tactile character, while films offer different resistance to water, oil and tearing. Test substrate and adhesive on the actual container for cold drinks, oily foods, bathroom products, freezing and hot-fill conditions.
What matters with clear labels?
A clear label can create a no-label look, but adhesive visibility, bubbles, container color and show-through from back copy affect the result. Build white ink as a separate technical layer where opacity is required.
Why does unwind direction matter?
Automatic application depends on winding direction, leading edge, label gap, web width and core diameter. Incorrect orientation can place the label upside down or present the wrong panel at the front.
Where should barcodes and small copy sit?
Keep barcodes away from tight curvature, seams and heavy condensation. Arrange small copy with sufficient contrast in the rear viewing zone, then check it on the printed and applied product.
Why is a physical sample essential?
A 3D mockup shows appearance but not bubbles, lifting, wrinkling, scuffing or application tolerance. Before production, test a printed sample on the real container under relevant water, oil, cold, temperature-change and transit conditions.
